Unlocking access to the life-changing experience of music-making for young people with complex lives

Unlocking access to the life-changing experience of music-making for young people with complex lives

(Programme concluded and no longer supported by the Trafigura Foundation)

Orchestras for All uses orchestral rehearsals, dedicated sessions of ensemble music-making, and team-building activities around music to create not only great symphonies, but also social change and inclusion. A UK-based organisation, Orchestras for All promotes access to high quality music experience, especially ensemble music making, for young people with complex lives and coming from all sorts of backgrounds.

The highly important benefits produced by music education (such as the development of self-confidence, self-efficacy, cultural awareness, and the social experience of playing in an orchestra) are often limited to privileged groups. Orchestras for All uses music making to transcends socio-economic status, disabilities and educational opportunities that divide generations to create a unique orchestra embracing all kinds of young music lovers.

In 2018, the Trafigura Foundation has supported Orchestras for All in the development of its diverse and meaningful activities.  The “National Orchestra for All” is a distinctive mark of the organisation, as it is the only non-auditioned orchestra where young musicians are nominated by their music teachers on the basis of their dedication and commitment to music in the face of challenging circumstances.

Other inspiring initiatives are the Modulo Programme, which helps music teachers establish small instrumental ensembles in schools or communities; and the Conductors of Change, a programme working with music teachers at the start of their careers to provide them with the skills and confidence to lead inclusive music classes.
