By 2050, 75 per cent of the global population will live in urban areas, including 40 per cent in slums where water supply and adequate sanitation and hygiene measures are underdeveloped. French NGO Eau et Vie seeks to improve the living conditions of populations in precarious urban areas through a comprehensive approach based on water access, hygiene promotion, solid waste management, improved sanitation and civil security.

Active in the Philippines, Bangladesh, Cote d’Ivoire, Bulgaria and France, Eau et Vie has created an innovative two-pronged model to drive long-term and sustainable change.

On one hand, it creates social enterprises that provide access to water, sanitation and waste management services to both individual households and public service providers. Not only does this provide higher living standards for residents, it also creates important employment opportunities for locals.

On the other hand, Eau et Vie runs local NGOs that empower communities to drive change within their society. They accomplish this through providing hygiene training for both children and adults, as well as training in recycling practices, and by encouraging them to participate in mass waste clean-ups. Importantly, NGOs also train the community in firefighting to facilitate the creation and management of volunteer firefighter brigades.

After a decade of partnership, Trafigura Foundation´s support to Eau et Vie ended in March 2020, with new investors ready to drive this innovative model forward into its next chapter. Our last two-year partnership focused on helping Eau strengthening its organisational capacity and, crucially, on helping Eau et Vie attract funding from impact investors – enabling it to consolidate and scale its model to reach even more slum communities.
