Joining forces with North Star Alliance to fight COVID-19 in sub-Saharan Africa

Marginalised communities in sub-Saharan Africa are tremendously challenged by lockdowns and measures that have been introduced to prevent an escalation of the COVID-19 pandemic across the region. It is feared that any major outbreak within the region could potentially have a devastating impact on the population, due to the limitations of the public health infrastructure.

To support an immediate response in the region, the Trafigura Foundation have donated USD150,000 to the North Star Alliance, a non-profit organisation that operates mobile clinics along the main logistics routes in ten African countries (Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe). Puma Energy Foundation also donated USD50,000 to the same project.

Mobile workers such as truck drivers are one of the key beneficiary groups targeted by North Star Alliance. As truck drivers are keeping on working and moving across countries during the pandemic, it is essential to provide medical services to protect their health and make sure they do not spread the disease across the communities they get in contact with.

Through its special COVID-19 initiative, North Star Alliance’s clinics provided prevention, care services and referral management of critical cases of COVID-19. The clinics also benefitted from additional protective measures to ensure continuity of healthcare delivery to local communities.
